Plastic Bag Ordinance

You've probably heard about the proposed Reusable Bag Ordinance which has been presented to the Town Council by Greenfield resident Garrett Connelly. The Town Council is currently redrafting the language in preparation for the Appointments and Ordinances meeting scheduled for January 13 where it will be discussed.
Says Town Councilor Hillary Hoffman, "Plastic bags. I want to emphasize that this proposed ordinance will not completely get rid of plastic bags. It will eliminate a certain type of flimsy plastic bag. This will not affect vegetable, meat bags at the supermarket. The Council intends to further engage with residents and business owners on this issue to come up with language and process that makes sense. I will broadcast meeting and public hearing dates."

The Council would like to get feedback from businesses that may be affected; you can give yours at the Appointments and Ordinances meeting on January 13, 6:30 p.m., at the Town Planning offices, 114 Main Street. Please let Caitlin know if you plan to attend so she can give an approximate number of attendees to the Council's clerk.
If you missed the recent article in the Recorder regarding the proposed ordinance, you can read it here.

Midwinter Movies 2014 quarter

It's Time for the GBA Midwinter Movies!

We're heading into the middle of winter; the days may be getting longer, but they sure feel cold! Here's a great way to get through those long winter evenings - head down to the Greenfield Garden Cinemas for the GBA's 2014's Midwinter Movies series, Reel Musicals!

After a Herculean effort, we finally managed to whittle down a gigantic list of fabulous musicals to four classic choices. Click on the movie poster to see a preview for each move:

Singin' In the Rain poster
Silent film star Gene Kelly & sidekick Donald O'Connor join forces with perky newcomer Debbie Reynolds to save their movie studio from ruin after the advent of sound in movies. Standing in their way, triple threat Jean Hagen - can't act, can't sing, can't dance. Hilarity ensues and Gene dances with a lightpost! - JANUARY 7

West Side Story poster

Romeo wears Converse, Juliet is Natalie Wood. You know how it ends but oh, how great it looks and sounds on the way! Watch the Sharks and the Jets dance down the path to inevitable tragedy on the soon-to-be-razed site of the future Lincoln Center, while thrilling to the amazing Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim score. Don't forget the tissues. JANUARY 14

Cabaret poster

As the Nazis rise to power outside the walls, Liza Minelli dances Fosse's jazzy steps and belts out Kander & Ebb's amazing songs at the seedy Kit Kat Klub while befriending new roomie Michael York. And in the midst of the chaos, the phenomenal Joel Grey Emcees. Life is a cabaret, old chum; come to the Cabaret! JANUARY 21

Muppet Movie poster
Kermit and his ragtag group of Muppet chums trek out to Hollywood to make it big while being chased by a frog-legs restaurateur in a classic roadtrip adventure. On the way they encounter a gigantic all-star cast including such luminaries as Steve Martin, Milton Berle, & Madeline Kahn. Includes Oscar-nominated "Rainbow Connection." Warm your heart in the depths of winter & get psyched for the new Muppet movie coming soon! JANUARY 28
Tuesdays in January at the Greenfield Garden Cinemas, 7 p.m. Only $5. All proceeds go to support the GBA's Holiday Lights program, so come on down and have a great time for a great cause!
Home for the Holidays Santa 2013
Fun at Home for the Holidays!
We had great fun at the GBA's Home for the Holidays event although we found out that with the Town Hall Annex removed, the Veterans Mall has become a bit of a wind tunnel, albeit a very scenic wind tunnel. We welcomed Santa from the North Pole by way of the Greenfield Fire Department; he took requests from the kiddies from 11-1. Then we enjoyed three fantastic sets of carolers - a group from the Greenfield Middle and High Schools led by the wonderful Elizabeth Markofski (who is also the music teacher of the GBA's son & heir - we love Ms. Markofski!); a group from Stoneleigh-Burnham School (who not only sang but also dressed for the season - sartorial splendor!) led by Meg Reilly; and a group from Paul Calcari's Franklin County Community Chorus, led by Stephanie Vinci. You can see pictures of some of our favorite moments here.
Thanks again to Our Family Farms, who gave away creamy, delicious hot chocolate to all our visitors; Santa for making the long trip from the North Pole; all the wonderful carolers who cheered us with song in the wintry wind; and all the businesses that participated in our Holiday Window Display contest, thereby helping make downtown even more festive this holiday season. And speaking of the Holiday Window Display contest...

The Holiday Window Display
Winners Are...
Baker Office Supply at number one, and Tim's Barber Shop at number two! And honorable mentions to number three, Pale Circus, and number four, Opus, who were neck and neck. We enjoyed all the windows, as always, and loved the way the contributed to making downtown Greenfield a jolly place to shop this holiday season! And congratulations to the two randomly-drawn voters who each won a Greenfield Shopping Spree valued at $250, Ruth and Bub. We had over 500 votes come in!

The two top Window Display winners will choose between advertising packages worth over $800 from WHAI/Bear Country and The Recorder.

Thanks again to all the businesses that participated:
Aliber's Bridal
Video Games Etc.

This years winners: Baker Office Supply and Tim's Barber Shop.

   Celebrity Bartender Jim Zaccara
Fun at Celebrity Bartending
Thanks again to the good folks at Taylor's Tavern and Hope & Olive's Jim Zaccara who provided the location and the manpower (and what manpower!) to help the GBA raise money toward its Holiday Lights Program. A good time was had by all and we gave away some great prizes. Look, here's Stella from Pale Circus who won the giant window scraper donated by Greenfield Savings Bank - she reports it's equally useful for the car and her shop windows!

Greenfield Brews 3:
GBA Membership Showcase 2014
It may be December but 2014 is only hours away, which means we're already thinking about the 2014 GBA Membership Showcase, Greenfield Brews 3. We packed the Arts Block last year with both friends and strangers (who are only friends you haven't met yet, of course) - what a great way to show off what your business has to offer!

2014's Showcase will take place on Thursday, March 27 - if you're interested in participating, it's never too early to get on board. For more info, call or email Caitlin at 774.2791 or gba(at)franklincc.org.

Hello & Goodbye to MembersDen logo
We're thrilled to welcome new member Den Modern Shop, located at 3 1/2 Osgood Street (formerly Urbio). Den specializes in vintage modern furniture and design and your humble Coordinator Caitlin has been spotted in the shop drooling over the amazing offerings (not literally - she wouldn't dream of spoiling any Danish modern finishes). There's a great selection of furniture and smalls - check it out! Den is open Thursday and Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. You can find their website here or like them on facebook here.

Stitch Lounge logo

At the same time, we're very sad to announce that GBA member Stitch Lounge is closing so its proprietor Jenna can devote more time to being a partner in her family business and to being a mom. All of their remaining stock and fixtures are for sale at deep discounts and this Saturday, January 4, will be your last chance to get some great bargains; you can check their facebook page for more info. Stitch Lounge was a great addition to the Greenfield mix and we're very sorry to see them go. Good luck in all your future endeavors, Jenna!

Congrats to Mohawk Trail Toastmasters!

Mohawk Trail Toastmasters is receiving a charter to become an official extension of Toastmasters International, a non-profit educational organization which helps individuals learn communication and leadership skills. The charter presentation ceremony will be part of the regular scheduled meeting on January 8, 2014 starting promptly at 6:30 PM in the Greenfield Co-operative Bank community room, 33 Bridge Street, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370. The public is invited to attend.

MTT began with a small group of local residents and business owners who wanted to improve their public speaking and leadership skills with the support of the Greater Shelburne Falls Area Business Association about a year and a half ago. "The club is proud to reach charter strength as it has been our primary goal thus far. It means our members are official Toastmasters who are eligible to earn educational awards. It also means new support from both district and international representatives." said Vice President of Public Relations Mark Boyer.

The group meets regularly on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at 6:30 PM at the Greenfield Co-operative Bank in Shelburne Falls. All meetings are open to the public - students, professionals, and community members who would like to improve their public speaking skills or leadership skills in a relaxed non-threatening environment can join them at the charter celebration on January 8 or join them at a regularly scheduled meeting! For more information go to mohawktrail.toastmastersclubs.org.
