It's Winter Carnival Weekend!

We've made it halfway through winter and as a reward, we can now enjoy the fabulous Greenfield Recreation Winter Carnival weekend! There's no better weekend in Greenfield all winter!

First of all, if you haven't been downtown today then you may not realize that at this very moment, chainsaws are turning huge chunks of ice into works of art! Make sure to visit all the sculptures, which will be finished by the end of today, and vote for your favorite at the ballot box on the Town Common by Sunday at 10 a.m. (Find the map on the website; see link below.)

Tonight a sampling includes the bonfire starting at 5 p.m., Fire Dancers at 6 p.m. and the fireworks at 6:30 p.m., all at Beacon Field.

On Saturday there's the Sleigh Bell Run and more and on Sunday there's a whole mess of fun at Beacon Field, including the Chili Cook-Off, horse-drawn hayrides, Community Tug of War, and Caitlin's personal favorite, the Cardboard Sled Race!

This is just a smattering of what's being offered so make sure to check out the Winter Carnival website so you don't miss a thing! It's more fun than a cardboard DeLorean full of kids!

Midwinter Movies 2014 February

It's a Great Time to Support the Garden and the
GBA Midwinter Movies!

Due to the cruelty of winter and the misery of frozen pipes, we had to postpone three of the four midwinter movies as we waited for our beloved Greenfield Garden Cinemas to reopen. And lo and behold - today is the day they reopen! You can see their whole schedule here. Show your support of this venerable institution by heading out to the movies as soon and as often as possible, and don't forget the popcorn and Icees!

But wait, you say you want to support the Garden AND the GBA Holiday Lights program at the same time? Well, have we got an opportunity for you! Our Midwinter Movie series will pick up where it left off this Tuesday, February 4 with West Side Story. Come out and see us, and feel free to invite friends through our facebook event page.

Click on the movie poster to see a preview for each move:

Romeo wears Converse, Juliet is Natalie Wood. You know how it ends but oh, how great it looks and sounds on the way! Watch the Sharks and the Jets dance down the path to inevitable tragedy on the soon-to-be-razed site of the future Lincoln Center, while thrilling to the amazing Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim score. Don't forget the tissues.

As the Nazis rise to power outside the walls, Liza Minelli dances Fosse's jazzy steps and belts out Kander & Ebb's amazing songs at the seedy Kit Kat Klub while befriending new roomie Michael York. And in the midst of the chaos, the phenomenal Joel Grey Emcees. Life is a cabaret, old chum; come to the Cabaret!

Kermit and his ragtag group of Muppet chums trek out to Hollywood to make it big while being chased by a frog-legs restaurateur in a classic roadtrip adventure. On the way they encounter a gigantic all-star cast including such luminaries as Steve Martin, Milton Berle, & Madeline Kahn. Includes Oscar-nominated "Rainbow Connection." Warm your heart in the depths of winter & get psyched for the new Muppet movie coming soon!

Greenfield Brews 3

Greenfield Brews 3 Is
Coming - March 27

Has it really been a year? It HAS! That means we're planning 2014's GBA Showcase, Greenfield Brews 3. Last year's event was a smashing success and we packed the Arts Block with friends of the previously-known as well as the stranger-is-just-a-friend-you-haven't-met-yet variety. Folks sampled food & drink and found out more about all sorts of GBA member businesses while listening to the band HASTE!.

This year's Showcase will be on Thursday, March 27 from 5-7 p.m. again at the Arts Block. You are the businesses that make this great event so successful so please help us show you off!
To reserve a space or get more information, email Caitlin or call 774.2791 by March 19. Space is limited. Guaranteed to be a good time, so get while the getting's good, which is NOW!

The GBA and Sandwich Boards

Yours truly was invited to speak before the Greenfield Licensing Board on the subject of sandwich boards at their last meeting. There are some on Licensing who would like to ban them altogether, there are others who see the value but are concerned about unlicensed boards and maintaining a consistency of quality and sidewalk safety.

This was the beginning of an ongoing conversation re. the boards so we would love to get your feedback. Please pass on your thoughts and opinions to Caitlin so she can funnel them in due course to Licensing. The GBA believes in the value of the proper use of sandwich boards so let's work with the Town to make sure they don't go away!

As always, Caitlin is waiting to hear from you: 774.2791 or via email

Text-A-Tip and Downtown Policing

We were pleased to have Greenfield Police Chief Robert Haigh speak to the GBA Board at our last meeting. He let us know that the department would be hiring two new officers in the near future (now the near past - welcome Officers Gomez and Purinton!) and two more during the year. The increase in staff should allow for more consistent policing of downtown and Chief Haigh is always interested in hearing feedback from downtown merchants.

One thing that came up in our meeting was the possibility of having Text-A-Tip here. The system is now in place - you can send an anonymous tip to the police by texting 274637 then either PROTECT for general crimes or KIDSAFE for child sexual exploitation or sex offenders. Chief Haigh also reiterated what we've heard in the past from the police - PLEASE report any and all suspicious activity you see. The more they know, the better they can help.

GSFABA Business Workshop

The Greater Shelburne Falls Area Business Association is offering a workshop that might be right up your alley!

What You Don't Know About Your Business
(and how to find out)
Wednesday, February 12 and 19, 6:00 - 7:30 PM
Mocha Maya's, 47 Bridge Street, Shelburne

What DON'T you know about your business and your customers -- and how is that holding you back? This two-workshop series teaches you how to use surveys to find out what you need to know to make the right decisions and get your business where you want it to go! In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

* Design clear, effective surveys
* Use tools to make survey creation and survey taking easier
* Get customers to answer your surveys

* Analyze survey results and identify trends, problems and opportunities

By the end of the first workshop, each participant will have created an online survey that can be used immediately to start gathering customer data. In the second workshop, we'll analyze real results from your customers, offer ideas for the next step forward, and brainstorm about using surveys to facilitate inter-business cooperation.

To register call the Greater Shelburne Falls Area Business Association (GSFABA) at 413-625-2526 or email
